Abstract
Ok, I've seen conflicting claims of 6820HK both being able to sustain 45w+ indefinitely and it's hard capped at 45w.
@D2 Ultima 's mobile i7 info still states that the 6820HK on ASUS model is limited to 4GHz OC, so does some manufacturer limit the OC on HK chips?
Objective
The objective of this investigation is to figure out how the 6820HK would handle OC and adding power.]
Testing equipment
The laptop model in question is manufactured by ASUS and provided as a test unit by Micro Center!
ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition
Specs as follow (TO BE UPDATED WITH MORE DETAILS) (?)
- Core i7 6820HK Unlocked BGA CPU
- Intel chipset (?)
- GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 FULL BGA model
- 32GB RAM (2x16GB) - mounted on upper motherboard side
- Toshiba (?) NVMe SSD
- 850 EVO 500GB (my own) slave drive
- 230W AC Adapter (could starve the machine out of power) (?)
- Windows 10 Pro Anniversary x64 - CLEAN INSTALLED
- 17.3" G-Sync panel (?)
- Intel 8260 WIFI
- (?)
The system has already been modified, the bottom clear panel have been removed to allow the fans direct access to cold air. Previously it was blocked and the fans would have indirect, inefficient access to cold air.
There will be no repaste/disassembly of this machine due to the amount of complicated steps needed to access the heatsink assembly.
Thanks to UncleWebb, I can use Throttlestop to change the CPU frequency and whatnot, this will provide most access to the system's performance tuning, HWINFO64 will be used to monitor system.
AC unit to blast the system with cold air (approx 17-18c) is available only from Monday to Friday when I am at work.
Known information
- 6820HK Overclock 4GHz limit is only on the ASUS gaming app, throttlestop allows adjustment up to 4.4GHz+
- FN+PageUP doesn't trigger max fans unlike certain G752xx models in the past
- Johnksss is doing a custom bios for increased overclock control
- (?) more to come!
RESULTS [UNFINISHED SECTION]
How to unlock power limit for 6820HK on ASUS G752VS
Before the unlock, the CPU would be limited to 45W for 8 seconds or so. Read below to unlock this power limit!
- Install and launch "ROG Gaming Center" DOWNLOAD FROM ASUS PAGE G752VS
- In TURBOGEAR Utility click the double >> arrow3. "EXTREME" and hit Apply - DO NOT RUN ANY STRESS TEST YET
- Start your throttlestop5. DO NOT TOUCH TPL SETTINGS, but click FIVR window.
- Select overclock to x39 for all cores
- On both CPU Core and CPU Cache, unlock adjustable voltage
- Apply undervoltage (I recommend -125mv, YMMV)
- Hit apply
- Run TS Bench 1024 8-thread and see the unlocked power limit!
What is needed at this point (I need your guys help!)
- Test methodology to find out:
-Short term power limit
-Long term power limit
-Throttling due to various factors - Fan control software
- Software suite to stress test the CPU in various ways
- Use Aida64 to find out various system information
- Someone in NY area balls enough to disassemble this
THIS THREAD IN UNDER CONSTRUCTION UNTIL STATED OTHERWISE. INFORMATION SHOULD BE INTERPRETED AS BOTH A "YES" AND "NO".
