Interesting. The article mentions Saab as having worked on something similar. But about 10 years ago, GM did some experimentation with HCCI (homogenous charge compression ignition) which, more or less, is diesel-style combustion for gasoline/petrol. It never went anywhere, but this tech looks like it might be the next step forward toward realizing it.
