A LCD display has multiple polymer layers, some of which may be soluble in ethanol or IPA, that is why people advocate screen cleaners meant for LCDs, so that you know that they don't contain solvents that could be potentially harmful. To be honest, 70% ethanol is a pretty mild solvent, screen cleaners meant for glass covered displays are a no no though, those could be very harmful. Lens cleaners are also usually ok, but you can look at the ingredients and stay away from anything that contains acetone, methylene chloride (dichloromethane) and so on.
