ENVY 17-nXXX / ENVY 17-rXXX INTEL Notebooks (2015)

Just had hands on with the i7-5500U with 940M version.

The FHD panel on this isn't fantastic for an IPS screen, but it is loads better than any TN panel that for sure.

Whoever said about USB2 or type C they are wrong, the unit has neither, it has USB3 ports only.

You don't even want to try and get into this unit, there are way to many screws on the bottom. Not that you can't just a hassle too.

940M is just a re-brand of the 840M, which is a very slow mobile card for a notebook this size. 950M is twice the spec of the 940M and would be better suited, but that comes at an additional cost, so much so you be better off buying a gaming notebook at those price levels.

The single vent is at the back right, as if looking if laptop was right in front of you. Good thing is heat away from the WASD area, but will not matter to much is under powered. The problem I see is the hot air is vented directly to right leg, and does not vent upwards over the display as many other notebooks do when the lid is open.

Silver keyboard is terrible same silver with transparent keys, exactly the same keyboard from the notebook below I had review last year. Really hard to see the keys in low lighting, meaning either back-light on or off hard to see, pretty much have to turn of light in the room the see the keyboard even with the back-light on. Pity as the palm rest is nice color, silver keyboard looks good, but isn't practical

Feels very heavy for something your would expect to be much lighter considering the frugal parts inside, and just overall very bulky it is no a thin laptop. However the hinge does feel not to bad, and doesn't have to much wobble.

Pros:
IPS screen/panel. (this is the main things).
Hinge is better than I has expected (but don't expect to much from it).
Removable battery (is this really a pro?).

Cons:
Silver keyboard with transparent letters (to hard to see compared with black keys/white chars)
Poor vent positioning.
Heavy and bulky.
No up-gradable access hatches on the bottom.
GPU 940M is to slow to size of unit.
CPU under powered for size of unit.
Price to high for what you get, look else where.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
