are those port dust caps necessary???

I'll want to bring my laptop computer around outside home and office, probably public cafe and restaurant.
Do I need those port dust caps e.g USB dust caps, Lan port caps...etc... to avoid possible dust or spills in the public crowded area??

On the other hand, would those caps cause damage to the computer ports instead? because they are not really so soft.
