My first child is going away to college in just a few weeks. She needs a new laptop. I would like to get her something that she can easily carry in a backpack on a bike. I would like to get her something that will last her several years, so a good processor and solid build would be nice. Thank in advance for suggestions.

I've had good luck with Dell, but I'm not that caught up in the brand. I hate that I missed the good deals on the XPS 13 (outlet store sold out, last I checked).
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Taking notes, research, writing papers, logging into the school website.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Traveling with it, likely by bike or foot, every weekday.
8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
Probably, but nothing that requires serious power. She is not a big time gamer. She will probably watch Netflix on it.
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
The more the better.
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
We do not need to see it in real life
11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows 10, preferable. If not, Windows 8.
Screen Specifics
12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Mid range or better resolution is preferable. We definitely don't want the lowest resolution.

She will probably use the computer outside some, so non-glossy might be better, but it's not a deal breaker
Build Quality and Design

Not as important as build quality, features and price

Within the next two weeks.

Several years, at least
Notebook Components
17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
I would prefer SSD, with a minimum of 256GB drive space
18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
