Greetings and thank you for reading my post,
Looking for a portable laptop for work, multimedia and light gaming. I would like it to have a tough build, as I am planning on carrying it with me in my backpack everywhere I go.
Another important factor is the screen: must be easy on the eyes, with good colour coverage, no ghosting and no PWM (though I read some of the screens use PWM at very low brightness (like 20%), it doesn't matter in that case since I won't be going that low very often).
I have been eyeing some convertible solutions as well, such as the Acer R13 but I learned the screen shows horrible levels of ghosting (at least the 2015 forum posts mention it often) as well as troubles with wifi.
1) What is your budget?
Around $1200 (can stretch to $1400)
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Anything between 13,3" and 14". I may consider a 15,6" as well if it meets all the requirements.
Keep in mind portability (for example, the Lenovo Y700 is technically 15,6" but doesn't even fit into a 16" pack due to its bulky chassis).
3) Where will you be buying this notebook?
Hungary
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Doesn't matter as long as it works well and fits my needs
Some brands are not available around here or very difficult to come by with limited options (e.g. Razer or Schenker laptops).
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
No.
6) What are the primary tasks you will be performing with this notebook?
Office work (mostly just word and excel), browsing (got a bad habit of having 50-100 tabs open at once), some coding (just started as a hobby), watching movies, streaming videos, connecting to TV, light gaming.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
The plan is to take it with me to most places I go to.
8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
I am planning to, though only less demanding games: Darkest Dungeon, Hearthstone, Starbound, Epistory although I wish to play these at FHD.
Also older titles like Age of Empires II, Baldur's Gate 2, Heroes of Might & Magic III, etc. but I reckon even a toaster can handle those these days.
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
7-8 hrs of web browsing.
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Buying online is OK.
11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
I would prefer Windows, but it can come with Linux or even FreeDOS.
12) What screen resolution(s) would you prefer?
WSXGA+, WUXGA, FHD, 1080p
13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
I would prefer a matte screen but not excessively reflective glossy screens will be considered as well (at least I read some manufacturers use some solutions to reduce the offensive glaring).
14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Something simple, don't care much for style (I like a good looking laptop but not gonna pay extra for a few extra curves). One thing though: I dislike dominantly silver - light grey coloured laptops.
15) When are you buying this laptop?
In the next 2-3 weeks.
16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
4 years.
17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
Minimum of 256 GB and yes, I would very much like an SSD.
18) Do you need an optical drive?
No.
19) Extras
Backlit keyboard and a functional touchpad would be highly appreciated.
That would be all, thank you for reading through and I will appreciate any constructive input.
