Hi. We're a homeschool family looking to buy laptops for our four oldest girls. They range in age from 10-13. In my mind portability is important. They might play games at times, but I do not anticipate big gaming needs or anything like that. Price is also pretty important to us since we'll be buying four of them.
1) What is your budget? Ideally $350 or less. We're budget conscious since we'll be buying 4. Any good deals out there?
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
a. Netbook; 10" screen or less
b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12" screen
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen
Probably b or c with c being the best bet so that the screen is big enough. But either could potentially work.
3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
United States
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
a. Like: Asus
b. Dislike: Dell, Acer
Not really, but I'll include a couple above. Quality is important.
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
Might depend on price, but I'd prefer new. I just really want to avoid having any issues with them.
6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Word processing, educational software, Web.
The kids might play some games and one likes to make movies with Movie Maker, but I'd assume those can be done with almost any new laptop.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Portability please.
8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
Yes, but not anything real intensive. Probably older games (my own favorites).
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
The more the better, although not crucial. I'd assume that anything more portable would have better battery life?
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Online is ok as long as the reviews are adequate and the laptop is quality.
11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows 7
Screen Specifics
12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Everyone is different. Some like really small text, while others like their text big and easy to read. (Scroll down to see screen resolution information.)
Regular? It'll be for kids aged 10-13.
13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? (Scroll down to see explanations.)
Doesn't matter a ton.
Build Quality and Design
14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not really. I'm not a big fan of the Lenovo retro look though.
15) When are you buying this laptop?
Soon. As soon as we know what we'll be getting and know it's a good deal.
16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
5 years? As long as possible which is why I'm looking for quality.
Notebook Components
17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
At least 400 MB would be nice. SSD is great, but I'm not sure what it does to overall cost.
18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
Yes. Blu-ray reader. Being able to write would be a bonus.
