Hi, almost exactly 5 years ago I came to this forum in search of buying my first own new laptop. The forum members helped guide me to a great deal on a HP laptop that I really liked and put to great use. Unfortunately earlier this month my laptop died (fried motherboard, I think; either way it's not turning on at all) and I have been considering replacing it (I have a desktop as well but would like a laptop too), although I'm not 100% positive buying it now is the right time. I am hoping you guys will help me again in my search for a good deal of a relatively similar laptop (adjusted for time of course). You can see the specs of my old laptop in my signature. Here goes:
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
No more than $1000, but hopefully closer to $800 or so.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
a. Netbook; 10" screen or less
b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12" screen
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen <-- will consider
e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen <---- preference
3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
USA
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
a. Like: HP (they seem to have good deals and my HP was good for me), open to others like Lenovo, ASUS, Dell, etc.
b. Dislike: Apple (not budget-friendly, not enough value in my opinion)
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
I'll consider them if necessary, but I hesitate.
6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Web browsing, movie watching/streaming, gaming
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Now that I have a desktop, this will usually be usually used on my lap at home or on the go.
8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
Yes, I tend to get nostalgic and play games like Red Alert 2/C&C Generals, Half-Life, etc. but do like to play newer games as well. Recent "flavors" were Civilization V and Starcraft II but I currently like to play Heroes of the Storm and Star Wars Battlefront. I don't usually get into the latest and greatest but I occasionally do get into a newer game.
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
I anticipate being near an outlet most of the time I use it, but good battery life is a plus (but not a deal breaker by any means).
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
No need to see it first.
11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows 10
Screen Specifics
12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Everyone is different. Some like really small text, while others like their text big and easy to read. (Scroll down to see screen resolution information.)
I'm a sucker for high resolution and wouldn't mind 4k if I could get it for a good price, but I realize budget limitations will likely make it impractical or bottlenecked by GPU. 1080p is fine.
13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? (Scroll down to see explanations.)
I prefer matte.
Build Quality and Design
14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not really.
15) When are you buying this laptop?
That's a good question. Likely soon, especially if I can get a good deal. I know I'll eventually want one though and I don't think I'll be saving much by waiting a few months.
16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
I feel like my 5-year-old laptop lived a good life (it was becoming out-dated by the time the hardware finally gave in). I want it to last a while, longer is better, without becoming obsolete.
Notebook Components
17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
First of all, speed is important (no 5200 rpm, although if the best deal required it I could replace the HDD with a faster one or an SSD). My old laptop had 500GB (7200 rpm) and I didn't fill it up, however I fear with increased game sizes it would not be very future-proof. My desktop has a 1TB 7200rpm HDD (for files and most games) with a 128GB SSD (for Windows and a few select games that are played often enough and tend to have long load times; Starcraft II and Civ V are installed on it), and I am seriously considering a similar configuration for my laptop (I know 17.3" laptops are more likely to have a 2nd drive bay). So in short, a SSD is desirable, but not absolutely needed.
18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
Yes, Blu-ray Reader is desirable but not necessary (will have higher stock if 4k resolution, but still not a deal breaker); a DVD Burner will suffice.
