Want to upgrade Clevo P750DM-G to 980m, need advice.

My Clevo P750DM-G has g-sync and currently has a g-sync 970m, but I'd like to update it to a 980m. Since the non-g-sync version is so much cheaper, I'd like to use that, but want to know if it's possible. I've heard some people say yes, but it won't have g-sync (of course), but others have said I will brick it trying. So I'd like to hear some definitive info on this topic with this setup and GPU please.
