How not to spend too much for a development laptop

Hi,

In the past I've spent a lot on computers. I need to run Visual Studio, Entity Framework, SQL server local. I have had friends who've only spent a few hundred for a computer that can run all of this. I was look at something with an i5 and 8 gigs of ram but I'm not sure the later versions of the software might not require something better. I don't want to spend too much "just in case" as I have in the past. Any advice?
