Pascal: What do we know? Discussion, Latest News & Updates: 1000M Series GPU's

Pascal discussion thread, eh? And so it begins... The technology train can be delayed, it can be diverted, but it can never be stopped.

I think the 3D memory is the greatest leap there, though I do wonder what impact the unified memory will have on console ports from PS4/XBO.

nVidia drivers causing jutter?

So I've watched videos on my laptop before... and the experience has always been better than my TV (as it should be given that my TV has simulated 120hz, not actual 120hz unless its in 3D mode)... But I have tried watching Hulu and Amazon Prime tonight and they both gave me so much jutter it was almost unbearable... So I grabbed a Bluray and stuck it in, installed the PowerDVD software that came with my Clevo and fired it up... I told it not to sync refresh rates the first time... Crazy jutter... I went and turned off hardware acceleration... crazy jutter... I went and closed the app and told it to sync the refresh... Slightly better but still everything was jumping around on the screen.

Did I just never notice this before? My LCD is set at 120hz, I really shouldn't be experiencing this in software mode let alone hardware... These nVidia 358.50 drivers have been really nice to me so I didn't want to change but since I don't plan on putting up a TV in my room, judder is unacceptable... Could it be the drivers or did I just miss the judder all this time? I'm not amused that my real 120hz LCD is performing worse than my old 2010 LG with "120hz" let alone my new Sony TV.

Oh and Cyberlink is terrible... Just so you know if you didn't already... ugh.

Next Generation Dell Precision Mobile Workstations press release

Thanks for sharing. Will read it now. Looking forward to this!!

OK read it and to be frank I find the release rather boring and unimaginative.

Then I clicked on the link to the Dell website and WOW!! Please embed a picture of the new Precision within the press release page. Seriously, that is one gorgeous looking laptop and if it does what you promise then there will be a lot of happy Dell customers.

Would also be nice to have more specs to go on, but maybe I have not found that info yet.

Dell XPS 15 with Infinity Display (2015)

Nice.

Dell did a fantastic job with the XPS 13, so I'm glad to see that they are cashing in on the R&D they put into thin-bezel designs.

The super thin bezel on the XPS 13 is probably the biggest leap in laptop chassis design since Apple created the MacBook Air (and caused an industry reaction that is now the ulteabook trend).

The best free security software

"What is the best free AntiVirus / Firewall / AntiMalware program?"
Many times I have read the same question here on NBR, so about 5 years ago, I've made a list of these programs.
To get the best security programs, sometimes you will have to pay but there are many very good and some excellent programs available for free.

Almost all programs listed are available for XP, Vista and Win7 (not all programs support 64-bit versions).
These are all free programs, not limited trial versions.

It's not necessary to choose one program from every section.
Rather than piling security programs, common sense, backups/images and using a limited/standard user account for daily work are much more important.
Use only what you master and keep the OS and programs updated. And again, backup!

Anti Virus
Avast! Free AV 7........98,6% - 11 FP
Avira Free 2013..........99,8% - 10 FP (includes 3rd party advertising, scores are for Avira 2012)
MSE 4.0....................94,9% - 0 FP (create custom/regular update task)
Panda Cloud AV 2.0....99.6% - 20 FP

The detection %-scores and number of 'False positives' are from the AV-Comparatives Sept 2012 file-detection test link.
(These are not on-execution/behavioural detection scores. Avira scores are achieved with high heuristic settings).
Paid AV and full security suites (and some free version) test results are available at AV-Comparatives ongoing real world/dynamic detection test results link,
Also bi-monthly 'detection, repair & usability' test results at AV-TEST.org link, daily&small sample set zero-day malware test results from MRG Effitas link and free AV real-time test results at WestCoastLabs.com link.

15 R2 Killer wifi disabled

Well the killer card is a network interface card, meaning that with either a wireless or wired connection all data packet have to pass through it, so by trying a wired connection we can narrow down the potential causes.

If a wired connection works without a hitch then it is possibly a problem related to the antennae or something related to it on the card, if it does the same with wired connection as wireless connection then it is possibly a problem somewhere else on the NIC card and will need to be replaced.

All the above is ofc under the condition that you have tried all possible software solutions.

Edit: also if you haven't tried reseating the card itself i advise you do so, it can simply be a bad connection to its port.

Windows 10

Where's the big change? ModernUI was introduced in Win8, nobody wanted it, so it goes. Multiple desktops is old, old, ooold hat, I'd be embarrassed to even mention that. Multiple desktops have been delivered with Windows systems for many, many years now. Task view? Yawn... So, where do you see the "big change"?

P.S.: This article (April fool's joke from last year) turned out to be prescient. Amazing really. "Windows 9 was simply too good to be true... :D
